Australian National Flag: Choose Your Fabric, Finish and Size
Our Australian National Flags are made in Australia to the standard 1:2 proportions. Choose the fabric, finish and size that suit your flagpole and location, using the guide below. If you’re not sure what to order, call or email us and we’ll help you choose.
Quick guide: which flag do I need?
| If you are flying the flag at… | We suggest |
|---|---|
| A home, in mild to moderate conditions | Knitted polyester, header & loops, 1800 × 900 mm (for a 6 m pole) |
| A school, business or public building where the flag flies daily | Woven polyester for longer life, header & loops, sized to your pole |
| A council, government or formal venue where appearance matters | Fully sewn, header & loops, sized to your pole |
| A coastal, exposed or high-sun location | Woven polyester or fully sewn (higher UV resistance and durability) |
| An indoor display, foyer or stage on a display pole | Vertical sleeve finish (fits poles up to 28 mm diameter) |
Not sure about your pole height or fittings? Contact our team and we’ll confirm the right flag before you order.
Step 1: Choose your fabric
- Knitted polyester: a lightweight fabric that flies easily, even in a slight breeze. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, and recommended for calm to moderate conditions.
- Woven polyester: a heavy-duty, linen-look fabric for indoor and outdoor use. It is longer-lasting and more durable than knitted polyester, with higher UV resistance, so it suits harsher environments.
- Fully sewn: our most prestigious and traditional option. Made from woven polyester pieces sewn together to form the design. Flags 2280 × 1140 mm and larger come with heavy-duty brass clips. Smaller flags come with noise-reducing plastic clips.
Lead time for fully sewn flags: if a fully sewn flag is not currently in stock, manufacturing can take up to 10 business days. If you need it urgently, please contact us to check the estimated time.
For more detail, see our material guide.
Step 2: Choose your finish
- Header with loops: for flying on a flagpole with a rope (halyard). Includes clips for easy attachment.
- Vertical sleeve: slides onto a display pole. Fits pole diameters up to 28 mm.
Need a different finish? If the option you want isn’t offered as a stock item, we can make it for you. Ask us about a custom finish.
Step 3: Choose your size
All our flags are made in the Australian standard 1:2 ratio (the length is twice the height). The standard flag for a 6 m flagpole is 1800 × 900 mm, which is approximately 2 yards.
| Flag size | Suits flagpole height |
|---|---|
| 500 × 250 mm | |
| 900 × 450 mm | |
| 1370 × 685 mm | 4.5 m |
| 1800 × 900 mm | 6 m (most popular, the standard home size) |
| 2280 × 1140 mm | 7.5 m |
| 2400 × 1200 mm | 8 m |
| 2740 × 1370 mm | 9 m |
| 3600 × 1800 mm | 12 m |
| 4570 × 2285 mm | 15 m |
| 5480 × 2740 mm | 18 m |
| 7310 × 3655 mm | 24 m |
| 12,800 × 6,400 mm | Parliament House, Canberra |

Flying the flag correctly
If you are responsible for flying the flag at a school, council, workplace or public building, our Australian Flag Protocols guide explains how to fly the flag, when to lower it, and when a flag should be replaced.
Quality you can rely on
- Colour that lasts: we test our ink formulations and processes, and have decades of experience producing optimal feel and finish.
- Expert stitching: hand-finished by experienced sewers using proven techniques. Secure stitching helps the flag last in flight, and the edges are hemmed to resist fraying.
- Easy care: polyester flags can be washed with a mild detergent to keep them clean and reduce wear and tear. See our flag care guide.
Made with the environment in mind
- Solar-powered factory: solar panels supply 70% of our electricity needs.
- Water conservation: our fabric washing machines are designed to minimise water and electricity use.
- Flag recycling: through our partnership with an Australian clean technology company, used flags and scrap material are recycled into reusable resources. Learn about our flag recycling program.

Frequently asked questions
What size flag do I need for my flagpole?
The standard size for a 6 m flagpole is 1800 × 900 mm. For other pole heights, use our size guide or contact us with your pole height and we’ll confirm the right size.
What is the difference between knitted, woven and fully sewn?
Knitted polyester is lightweight and flies easily in light breezes. Woven polyester is heavier, more durable and more UV resistant. Fully sewn flags are our most traditional and prestigious option, made from woven polyester pieces sewn together.
Which finish should I choose?
Choose header with loops if your flagpole has a rope (halyard) and clips. Choose vertical sleeve if the flag will slide onto a display pole up to 28 mm in diameter.
