Frequently Asked Questions

What flags are flown on ANZAC Day?

The most common flag flown on ANZAC Day is the Australian National Flag. Many Australians also display commemorative “Lest We Forget” flags or banners to honour those who served.

Should the Australian flag be flown at half mast on ANZAC Day?

The Australian National Flag is typically flown at half mast until midday on ANZAC Day as a mark of remembrance, and then raised to full mast for the rest of the day.

Which size Australian flag should I fly at home?

The most popular size for home use is 1800 × 900 mm (2 yard). It suits standard 5-6 metre outdoor flagpoles and gives an impressive, proportionate display.

For smaller poles or verandah mounts, we recommend:

  • 1500 x 750 mm – ideal for balconies or fences, hung with eyelets
  • 1370 × 685 mm – good for smaller outdoor poles
  • 900 × 450 mm – suited for small or indoor displays

If you’re unsure, feel free to contact our team and we’ll help you choose the right size for your space.

Are ANZAC Day flags suitable for outdoor use?

Outdoor ANZAC flags should be made from durable polyester or woven materials designed to withstand Australian weather conditions.

FAQs

What is the correct flag protocol for ANZAC Day?

The flag protocol on Anzac Day requires that the Australian National Flag be flown at half-mast from dawn until noon in your locality, after which it should be raised to the peak of the flagpole for the remainder of the day.

When lowering the Australian National Flag to half-mast, it should be raised to the top of the mast before being lowered to the halfway point.

On ANZAC Day, all standard flag protocol still applies.

You can read the full Australian Government flag protocol here

What does ANZAC stand for?

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The term originally referred to the combined forces who served in the Gallipoli campaign during World War I and is now used more broadly to honour all Australians and New Zealanders who served in military conflicts.

What is ANZAC Day?

ANZAC Day, held on April 25 each year, commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in 1915 during World War I. It has become Australia’s national day of remembrance for those who served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Why do Australians say “Lest We Forget”?

“Lest We Forget” is a phrase used during remembrance ceremonies to honour the memory of those who served and sacrificed in war. It reflects a commitment to remembering their service and the impact of war on communities.

Flagworld is Australia’s leading manufacturer of:

  • Australian National Flags (all sizes)
  • ANZAC Day flags
  • Handwavers
  • Car flags
  • Bunting
  • Desk flags
  • Event & council-grade outdoor flags

All are Australian-made and designed for harsh local conditions.

Businesses, councils, schools and the public can order directly online with fast delivery Australia-wide.

What sizes do ANZAC Day flags come in?

Common sizes include:

  • 900 x 450mm – for small poles, verandas, kids
  • 1800 x 900mm – standard house size to suit 6m pole
  • Large formats – 2.4m+ and custom sizes for councils or commercial sites
  • Handwavers – 150mm to 300mm
  • Desk flags – 150mm x 100mm

All Flagworld outdoor flags are available in high-quality knitted or woven fabric.

How do I choose a durable ANZAC Day flag for outdoor use?

Look for:

  • Knitted polyester, which performs best in wind
  • Reinforced stitching and strong header
  • UV-resistant inks
  • Double-stitching on the fly end
  • Flags made in Australia for Australian weather

Imported nylon flags often fade or tear much faster.

Are there eco-friendly ANZAC Day flags?

Yes.

Flagworld manufactures:

  • Recyclable handwavers
  • Durable knitted polyester flags designed to last longer (reducing waste), and recycleable on return to Flagworld
  • SustainaWrap™ eco-mesh for events and festivals

We also partner with Australian textile recycling initiatives to divert used fabric items from landfill.

Do any companies offer bulk discounts on ANZAC Day flags?

Yes. Organisations running ANZAC Day events (schools, councils, community groups, parade organisers) commonly order:

  • Handwaver flags
  • Commemorative flags
  • Bunting
  • Flag bundles

Flagworld offers bulk pricing for large orders. Contact us for event or council quantities.

Can I order custom ANZAC Day flags?

Yes.

You can create:

  • Custom artwork
  • Club or event logos
  • Branded prints
  • Council, school, or business branding
  • Sponsor-branded flags

Large-format custom printing is available, contact us for a quote.

How do I respectfully get rid of an old or damaged flag?

The recommended method is to dispose of it privately and respectfully, ensuring it is not reused inappropriately.

Flagworld’s Australian-made flags can be recycled through our textile recycling program.

What materials are used in high-quality ANZAC Day flags?

Premium outdoor flags are typically made from:

  • High-strength knitted polyester (best for light wind)
  • Woven polyester (premium traditional look)
  • Heavy-duty stitching
  • UV-resistant inks

These materials last significantly longer than cheap imports.
